Student Caught Stories

Welcome to the ESP’s Student Caught Stories! Here we highlight Entrepreneurs, Innovators and Changemakers (EICs) from around the world caught by students at Western Washington University.

Initially started as the Pedal Project in ‘97, Kyle Morris took old bikes and turned them into single speed bikes and shared them with the community. Kyle has evolved that practice into a community focused bike shop: The Bike hub.

“Founding Mothers” pooled their own resources together and were able to establish a transitional home for homeless women and children. What began as one home eventually grew into an organization that now serves hundreds of families each year.

Bellingham has tons of people excited to be outside and participate in activities like skiing, hiking, and camping but no access to affordable gear. West Person’s idea of a repair/ consignment store arose while working at an outdoor store that threw away faulty but fixable high-quality gear.

Sustainable Connections, a nonprofit that has been active in the Bellingham area for nearly a quarter of a century and strives to do exactly what their name suggests; connect the community through sustainability.

The Bellingham Makerspace offers materials and machines for creating, designing, and building almost anything you can imagine.

Common Threads Farm is a non-profit that connects kids to healthy food. Through multiple programs they educate local kids on gardening and cooking skills while also providing free, healthy meals for kids experiencing food insecurity.

Through our site visit and interview with Melissa, the Sustainability Director at the Food Co-op, we were able to explore how the organization approaches environmental responsibility, affordability, community involvement, and sustainable food systems in the Bellingham community.
