Common Threads Farm is a non-profit in Whatcom county that connects kids to healthy food. Through multiple programs, they educate local kids on gardening and cooking skills while also providing free, healthy meals for kids experiencing food insecurity. Common Threads Farm primarily addresses the sustainability goals of Zero Hunger and Quality Education.
How do They Make an Impact?
Common Threads Farm believes that food education is critical to building a healthier and happier future for kids. They have seen first hand how economic hardship and limited access to fresh food can affect kids' education and well-being. By teaching practical skills and knowledge around food, Common Threads Farm creates a direct and lasting positive impact on the kids involved.
The Farm focuses on a hands-on approach to food education and changemaking. Kids are in the dirt, gardening and planting while learning about food and plant science. After the produce is harvested, Common Threads Farm is in the classroom, teaching lessons on preparing food, food safety, and, of course, the dreaded clean up. Kids are encouraged to share their thoughts on the meals, even if it wasn't their favorite. Honest communication surrounding food is a priority in this environment and is always encouraged!
How Sustainability Shows Up in Common Threads Farm
Sustainability shows up across Common Threads Farm’s business in multiple ways. They grow and help maintain gardens at schools in Whatcom county that provide a platform for kids to learn about healthy food and plant science. They also run a food truck, “Basil,” that provides meals to kids and families experiencing food insecurity. Common Threads Farm focuses their resources on the areas of the county that are the most affected
by limited food access and education. Through these programs, students have brought recipes and knowledge back into their homes, opening up the door for families to learn about healthy recipes and cooking.
Common Threads Farm primarily operates on federal and state grants, as well as some community partnerships. Recently, the landscape for these grants has changed. It has become more difficult to get the same funding that was guaranteed in years past. Some programs have been completely terminated, resulting in fewer schools being served by Common Threads Farm.
The People Behind the Mission
Common Threads Farm is run by a deeply motivated team, who knows their work makes a difference. Food education is at the core of this business, and is what drives Common Threads Farm to continue to offer high quality information and experience to kids. The lessons being taught extend past the classroom environment, they are designed to be lifelong.

Common Threads Farm focuses on creating hands-on experiences that are memorable for the kids. They grow and prepare meals with the kids that will be impactful, even if the meal is not the kids cup up tea. The experiences that are created are memorable but also educational. Pairing education with a new flavor or sense of achievement can be particularly impactful for kids who may not have had the chance to try this at home.
